As it’s #NationalStationeryWeek this week (25-31 April 2016), I thought I would write a post on why great stationery is so important to businesses.
Stationery goes beyond simple letterheads, compliment slips and business cards. When stocktaking your stationery this month, you should consider the following points:
- Is all of the information up-to-date with the current status of my business?
- Does all of my stationery comply with the relevant statutory guidance?
- How high is my turnover on stationery? Is it becoming irrelevant too quickly?
- Are we ordering enough or too little?
- Does it need a refresh to make it more in keeping with our brand aims and current target market?
Going beyond letterheads
Could a series of templated stationery help your staff to become more effective in their work? Or could it help with issues within your business? Taking example from our own business, we use templates for quote requests, proof approvals and other key stages of project development. By using these templates, we make sure all key details are consistent – lets break them down to see how they help us.
Quote Requests – we request quotes for one project from several sources. By using a standard template, we can ensure all resulting quotes are for the same specification. This makes the task of choosing the supplier quicker for quoting, meaning our clients get our quotes back quicker.
Proof Approval – rather than keep asking each client to cover the same points by email, we include these as part of our proof approval form. This is then included with our digital proofs for sign off within the document, and locks the file.
Print Ordering – this mirrors our Quote Request form so what we ask for in our quote is what is ordered. This means any discrepancies can be questioned with confidence, it also means the project has a paper trail that is linked to its Project ID throughout.
Terms and Conditions – if you have detailed terms and conditions, it may be cheaper to have these printed commercially.
How could templates stationery help your business becoming more efficient or more protected?
So you’ve decided to go it alone and self-publish – but a second opinion is still crucial to your success and not to be underestimated! As a hybrid publisher, I’ve been astounded at the number of seminars touting that self-publishing for free is the RIGHT if not ONLY way to get your book out into the public domain. Sadly, this approach has not only impacted on individual authors, but also on the view of self-publishing as a whole. It has only served to undermine what was already a route that was considered in negative terms.
When a second opinion is critical
As an author, you are too closely related to your content to review your work objectively. A second opinion can help your work to be viewed better from a reader’s point of view, and this will help you improve your title and your reader’s experience. This second opinion can come in many forms; a friend, a family member or colleague could help you gauge your reader’s understanding of your content. However, a second opinion can give you so much more information and aid when it is given by a publishing professional.
The following questions are the ones you need to consider when going through a second opinion process.
- Is your book of value to your reader?
- Can your reader easily understand and implement your content?
- Have you removed all of the jargon that your reader may not understand?
- Has your book been checked for spelling, grammar and use of terminology?
- Have your sources been correctly identified and credited?
- Have any tutorials been thoroughly tested by someone with few skills in the topic you are covering?
- Have you included references to research to support your points?
- Is your cover easily legible at thumbnail size?
- Is your book’s design relevant to your content and audience?
- Could your book be better designed and help your user access your content easier?
